Alaska lodging for the Alaska adventurer
Chickadee Facts
The Chickadee is a hardy little winter survivor. They tense their tiny muscles in their skin, like other birds, it raises their feathers and traps in an insulating layer of air much like a down quilt. Speaking of down quilts, we do provide them on every bed (not chickadee down but goose down!) in all three rooms.

The chickadee takes turns at the feeder, just as my guests take turns at the breakfast table. Another fact about this unusual and marvelous little bird is that it rarely travels out of the northern tier. Unlike the Chickadee, I do travel out to Hawaii, Europe, and California. In the future, I want to correspond to you all when I am relaxing on a trip. The trips I go on refresh me for the busy and fun-filled summer.

A chickadee must eat the equivalent of 250 sunflower seeds a day to stay warm. At my bed and breakfast I provide a gourmet granola with sunflower seeds. Also, a few sunflower seeds in pancakes is very delicious!. Many of my guests call and request a breakfast recipe from a prior visit. If I am able to work in your favorites, I'll be glad to accommodate. Last but not least, this bird is special to me because it is such a survivor in the winter, living close to the edge of life.

Chickadee Breakfast Not For the Birds
The above headline appeared recently in Millie Bentley's Kitchen Corner column of the "Tundra Drums". Millie stayed with us for several days in January of this year. During her visit with us, she graciously shared tales, and tasty breakfast dishes that she serves at her B&B named the Bentley Porter House B&B in Bethel, Alaska.

Here is a quote from her column. "The hospitality extended by Nancy Grant and her husband Jerry Nielsen here at the Chickadee is worth the stay. Nancy is a retired special education teacher and Jerry is an active-duty fisherman/hunter, storyteller and part-time cook. Nancy and Jerry have a lovely home in South Anchorage close to Huffman and Old Seward, with three bedrooms and a sitting room devoted to B&B use. It is very comfortable, the price reasonable, the company good, and Nancy serves up a great breakfast."
